#4 Passat 2012 – 2019
Optimized for the North American market, the redesign of the Passat in 2012 brought its fair share of improvements for the German sedan. We note more space in the front and rear, improved handling, an up-to-date multimedia screen, and several modern safety systems. Although assembled at the VW factory in Chattanooga, Tennessee, the interior finishing quality is somewhat lower than what one might expect from a German car.

#3 Jetta 2012 - 2017
The 6th generation of the Volkswagen Jetta made its debut in 2011, offering a new look, a trendier and more spacious interior in the rear seats. Volkswagen's philosophy with this car was to make it less expensive compared to the competition. To achieve this, the German manufacturer moved the production of its sedan to Mexico, where 70% of the parts were designed and manufactured. Certainly, the quality of materials in its interior has been reduced, as well as some mechanical aspects such as the abandonment of the independent rear suspension. However, these changes not only helped to reduce the price of the 6th generation Jetta when new, but also on the used markets today and on the cost of replacing certain parts that were once built in Germany and therefore more expensive. In terms of engines, several options are available, including a 2.5-liter 5-cylinder, a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder replaced from 2016 by a 1.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder, and obviously, a diesel version in the TDI model that made headlines in the Dieselgate scandal. We do not recommend this engine for obvious reasons.

#2 Tiguan 2011 - 2017
The Volkswagen Tiguan made its debut in 2008 in the North American market, and it was in 2011 that it underwent its first redesign. It was then equipped with new headlights and taillights, a new grille, and a new three-spoke steering wheel. This 'Phase II' was a significant step forward, and we do not recommend buying a Tiguan from earlier 'Phase I' years due to reliability issues. Based on the platform shared with the Golf and the Passat, among others, the Tiguan is renowned for its impeccable sound insulation, spacious cabin (especially in the rear), and excellent finishing. Its handling will also please you, as will its spirited 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which offers an excellent compromise between performance and fuel economy. Note that the Tiguan was offered with front-wheel drive as standard, but the 4-Motion all-wheel-drive system was also available as an option. In 2015, the Tiguan underwent a minor refresh, focusing on improving fuel efficiency and adding standard safety equipment such as a backup camera.

#1 Golf 2015 - 2019
The 7th generation of the Volkswagen Golf made its debut in North America in 2015. Aside from the aesthetic aspect, the biggest change came in the area of powertrain, abandoning the 2.5-liter 5-cylinder in favor of a much more eco-friendly and reliable 1.8-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder producing 170 horsepower. The interior also saw significant improvement with the addition of a more modern multimedia screen integrating Apple CarPlay, as well as higher quality materials compared to the MK6. Of course, driving enthusiasts are not left out either with the GTI and R versions of the Golf, which are true gems on the used car market!
