When it comes to considering an interesting subcompact in the world of used cars, two models always stand out in discussions; the Nissan Micra and the Toyota Yaris.
In the first case, we're talking about a car that has been available here since 2015. For the latter, we refer to a model that has been around since 2005 without undergoing significant changes over time.
In both cases, we're dealing with products that have proven themselves in Estrie. The reliability of the Toyota Yaris is legendary, while that of the Nissan Micra is rising to the same level.
We can tell you that at Groupe Beaucage, these are two cars that we rarely see in the workshop. But how do you choose between the two? Is the experience with each very similar or very different? Let's see.
The Nissan Micra
When Nissan brought the Micra to North America, it introduced a product that had earned its stripes in Europe. In fact, the generation we have here has been rolling there since 2010.
Its technology isn't the most advanced on the market, everyone knows that. Its 4-cylinder engine isn't the most powerful, and its automatic transmission only has four speeds. Even the manual option has just five gears. However, its price is practically unbeatable, and when you take the wheel of this little car, you'll have a lot of fun on the roads of Estrie.
The best value for money is with the S version, which sold for less than $10,000 when new, until recently. With the other variants, SV and SL, you get more equipment. It's up to you to decide where your needs lie.
The Yaris
With the Yaris, you know exactly what you're getting. The 4-cylinder engine of this car is also bulletproof. The transmissions are also outdated, but they don't break. We're talking about a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed automatic, just like with the Micra.
Power isn't the main selling point either, but you get used to it. Expect to pay a little more for it in the used market, a fact attributable to its reputation; you know you'll save money in the long run with a Yaris.
The Difference
Despite their many similarities, there are some notable differences between the Yaris and the Micra. The Yaris is more spacious in all respects, which could be important if you always have things to transport. In terms of comfort, it's practically a tie between the two. The same goes for the equipment, which provides the essentials. Mechanically, the Micra is more robust and offers a slightly more fun driving experience.
The soundproofing is also similar, as is the sense of assurance that comes from the driving experience. You'll pay slightly more for the Yaris, but you'll also be able to resell it at a better price.
And we could go on for a long time. Both models have several common features, making it difficult to say that one is much better than the other in the used car market.
